Son of an officer in the 53rd Sikhs
An interview with the son of Captain Dudley Maurice Newitt (1894-1980). As an officer in the 53rd Sikhs (Frontier Force), Newitt served in Egypt, Iraq, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza) and Syria. He arrived in Basra in 1916 and took part in all the main battles around Sanyat, the capture of Baghdad and the advance up the railway. At the Palestine Front he took part in the advance against the Turks in 1918 and was awarded the Military Cross after the battle of Samaria.
