As part of the exhibition we explored the issue of the home front and the families left behind. Within this section we reproduced in Punjabi Gurmukhi script and in English a beautiful but heart-wrenching Punjabi folk song which lamented the going to war of the menfolk. 'Take the bachelors to war' was a key phrase in the song and one which resonated with many who read it.

In this video clip Mrs Dayawant Kaur Garcha reads lines from the song in Punjabi in the company of her sister-in-law Mrs Amarjit Kaur Grewal who added:

No one knew what was going on back in Punjab a hundred years ago, but now we know something. The wording of the song is so touching...it is a very sad, emotional song...putting into words the deepest thought of women about men going to war, away from them.
