Sikh Faces of the First World War: Internal Security.

The striking and severe face of Chattar Singh of the 52nd Sikhs is captured here by the French war artist Paul Sarrut in March 1915.

The 52nd Sikh Frontier Force didn't see action in the Western Front where Chattar Singh was sketched by Sarrut.

They were purely an internal security force - and Chattar Singh demeanour seems to display that perfectly.

Later, the battalion was sent to in Mesopotamia in 1917 and fought in the Battle of Sharqat.
