While researching for the 'Empire, Faith & War' exhibition, our researchers were lucky enough to examine the original Metropolitan Police files of Udham Singh.

Pictured is the front page of his witness statement from the evening of his arrest and is signed (in his hand) by Mohammed Singh Azad.

Udham Singh (26 December 1899 – 31 July 1940) was a revolutionary best known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer in March 1940 in what has been described as an avenging of the Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre.

O'Dwyer was the governor of the Punjab throughout the First World War and was absolutely instrumental in providing the Indian army with hundreds of thousands of men from Punjab.

Learn more about Michael O'Dwyer's role at the 'Empire, Faith & War' exhibition at London's Brunei Gallery, SOAS. For more details, see here.
